Jazz Haven Presenting, Preserving and Advancing The Culture of Jazz Collaboration is a term that cannot be extricated from any definition or description of Jazz Haven. Since its inception in 1996, the organization has promoted the culture of Jazz through unique collaborations with artists, organizations, schools and other entities. The skill and passion that its board members have demonstrated for the culture of jazz encourages a growing network of organizations and programs that help to promote jazz education as well as jazz as an art form for general consumption. Jazz Haven operates with a mission: JAZZ HAVEN uses jazz as a community-building vehicle to preserve, present and advance the culture of jazz, and to nurture interest and participation in the art form of jazz music in the greater New Haven Area. JAZZ HAVEN, both as a presenter and facilitator, welcomes collaboration with other non-profit groups, civic organizations and businesses in the community, thus maximizing the potential and public awareness of this truly American art form. JAZZ HAVEN is committed to the creation of a year-round jazz “scene” anchored in New Haven, through encouragement and support of jazz musicians and audiences at all levels of experience, recognition and exposure. With its beginnings as a series of performances at Artspace, Jazz Haven spun off into its own orbit in 1996 and was founded by Doug Morrill and Harold Danko now the Director of Jazz at Eastman School of Music at University of Rochester incorporated programming that included master classes with visiting artists in collaboration with host organizations, concerts featuring the likes of the Heath brothers, tributes to late jazz masters, benefits for not-for-profit organizations, education programs and consultations for programming and technical support of other organizations with similar missions. Collaboration is a core component of the mission of Jazz Haven, as the majority of programming in its history reflects. Jazz Haven has developed a template for creatively employing the art of collaboration to strengthen promotion of events as well as to build audiences and raise awareness of the missions of each of its respective collaborators. Jazz is an art form that is accessible to all people, all ages, all cultures, at all times. For this reason, Jazz Haven has enjoyed a history of diverse associations.
